Create In Me A Clean Heart And Put Your Steadfast Spirit Within Me

0

As part of our journey with daily Bible studies, I want God to “Create in me a clean heart and put your steadfast spirit with me.”

I want to know God more and the power of his resurrection. I need a clean heart so that God can stay in me; He hates anything unclean. I want to come near God and gaze upon His beauty, but my heart is impure.

Who can come before our God, the king? “He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.” – Psalm 24:4

Oh, God! Create in me a clean heart. God can not stay in a heart filled with:

“sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery, idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.” -Galatians 5:19

Is your heart filled with evil deeds such as the ones listed in Galatians 5:19? Then, join me as we ask the Lord to create in us a clean heart.

Create in me a clean heart – David prayer of conviction

Psalm 51 is a compelling emotional song sung by David when he coveted one of his soldiers’ wife. It is said to be the sinner’s prayers because of how David repented and recognized his transgression. Psalm 51 has been my favourite song in the Bible since my childhood. I don’t take it as a sinners’ prayers, but it draws me closer to God and paints a picture of reconciliation for me whenever I read through it.

Psalm 51:10-12

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,

and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence

or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation

and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

We all know King David’s story after he murdered one of his soldiers ( Uriah ) and slept with his wife. God revealed it to the prophet Nathan, and he rebuked David of such immoral practised.

One of the most striking aspects of this story is David’s immediate recognition of his sin and how he humbles himself before God. After Nathan gives the long rebuke from the Lord, a rebuke that most of us would have gone into defensive mode after hearing.

“David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die.”

(II Samuel 12:13)

Nathan told David that “his sins have been forgiven” That is the message we hear any time we confess our sins. If David sins have been forgiven, how should he then ask the Lord to create a new heart in him?

Create in me a clean heart – why should we pray this way

“You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;

you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.” “My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.” -Psalm 51: 16-17

God delights in a repented heart. God takes pleasure in a person that recognizes his sins and repents them. You always have to acknowledge or accept your fault whenever you spoil your relationship with God.

And this is how David demonstrated this in his song. He knew his fellowship with God had been affected, and he needed a fresh start. Creating a new heart in me is to tell God you no longer need the sinful nature and are looking for a heart that will be obedient to God’s word and build intimacy with God again.

Many of us live life on our terms, goals, desires and no longer seek the direction God desires for us. We have become like the prodigal son, gone astray from the right path, and needs repentance.

Christ Jesus has paid the penalty associate with sins through the atoning sacrifice of his precious blood. Therefore, we need to continually confess our hearts to God and seek His restoration and renewal.

Praying that God should create a new heart in you is a contrite prayer that shows that we need God more than any other thing. It also unites us to God after we have messed and spoiled our fellowship with Him.
